Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation, a non-governmental organization in special consultative status with ECOSOC, based in Chennai, India, envisions environmental protection, sustainable development and promotion of human rights and self-governance.
Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation works to conserve the glory of nature and its greenery and gaiety. The organization aspires and acts for Sustainable environmental regeneration, Sustainable social development and Sustainable economic development.
The main course of action includes direct action based interventions, campaigns, seminars, conferences, rallies, mass demonstrations, advocacy interventions and action based networking and solidarity initiatives.
Every year on 5th June World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated. In the reporting period the day was commemorated in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, actions were organized in different parts of the state of Tamil Nadu encouraging statewide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
Along with Green city Rotary club, Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation organized tree planting campaign on 05.06.2014, at Meenakshi college, one of the lead colleges in Chennai. Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation president Mrs. Soumia Anbumani Ramadoss participated, distributed saplings and motivated the students and professors to take ahead the campaign further among the public.
In 2015, the world environment day was focused on the ban of plastic bags. Government was requested to strictly implement the law. Now all the shops do not provide plastic bags free of cost.
On 09.01.2016, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss released a scholarly book titled “The Chennai we want” in the wake of the deluge in Chennai city which haunted the city and took away human lives in December 2015. The book assessed the causes for flooding and the procedures for prevention and adaptation. Following this he took out a campaign throughout the Chennai city and interacted with the people.
Continuation of Billion Tree Campaign
Information about reforestation has been shared with communities, local self governance bodies and school teachers and children. The organization organized a total of 157 tree planting programs all over the state of Tamil Nadu from January 2013 to December 2016. A total number of 495000 tree saplings were planted. The trees plated are indigenous trees that are appropriate to the local environment.
Preventing Non Communicable Diseases
On 3.12.2013, pasumai Thaayagam Foundation organized a Free Siddha Medical camp in Chennai. Siddha doctors (professionally qualified traditional medicine practicing doctors). Medicines were distributed after diagnosis of the diseases. Referrals were made to the national Siddha hospital and research center, Tambaram Chennai.
The organization has been organizing programs in continuation of the campaign challenging obesity, alcohol related diseases and tobacco related diseases.
Mass actions were held in Chennai on 10.04.2015 demanding the government to bring law mandating 85% pack warning on all tobacco products.
Decade of Action for Road Safety
The Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, campaign in Tamil Nadu launched by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, former Indian Health Minister at Marina Beach, Chennai, India, in the year 2011 is being taken ahead to all other districts of the state. Different stakeholders have joined the campaign and are voicing their support by holding area wise road safety actions. School children and college students are also involved.
Action combating Tobacco
The organization is a strong campaigner against tobacco. On all World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) on 31st May, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, actions were organized in different parts of the state of Tamil Nadu by way of public programs, seminars and rallies.
Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation has been closely monitoring the TAPS violation at the retails and also by the tobacco companies.
